While online teaching had existed beforehand, the pandemic forced educators to find creative ways to deliver instruction that was both engaging and meaningful. Now that in-person learning has returned, many people still question whether online learning can work for instrumental lessons.

What Students Can Learn in Online Clarinet Lessons

Students can learn much more than notes and fingerings in an online lesson. With the right teacher, online clarinet lessons can help students develop:

• Embouchure
• Breath support
• Articulation
• Finger technique
• Scales and technical exercises
• Rhythm and sight-reading

• A camera angle that shows the student’s face, hands, and instrument

Without these things, online instruction can become difficult for both the student and the teacher. However, the setup does not need to be expensive. Even small adjustments, such as improving the camera angle or changing Zoom audio settings, can make a major difference.

​Depending on the teacher and program, online lessons can vary widely. In my teaching, I believe in giving students more than weekly instruction. I want students to understand the clarinet as an instrument, the repertoire as a living tradition, and themselves as developing musicians.
