TEACHING

PHILOSOPHY
I strongly believe that it is important to treat each student with respect, patience and kindness. Without these three important elements, I cannot earn their trust, which is an important element to successful learning, growth and academic development. I work with the student to set clear goals for themselves. Individual lessons are a time of constructive criticism, technical guidance, and exploring musical ideas. It is expected that students are prepared for their lessons through their own daily practice sessions. I have high expectations of my students because they are expected to be prepared, diligent and ready to learn. I encourage them to fail so they can learn, have ambition so they can achieve their goals, strive and work hard for their dreams, and do what they believe is right.

Students come from a variety of ages, backgrounds, learning styles and each individual has their own strengths and weaknesses. As an applied instructor, my job is to provide instruction to these characteristics by tailoring their lessons specifically to their needs as a means to highlighting their talents and to build on their weaknesses while taking into account their musical goals.

As an instructor, my job is to quickly identify problem areas in the student’s playing and to solve them in a pragmatic matter. If one approach is not effective, I will try to find other ways to demonstrate the concept until we find a solution that works for them. My teaching approach facilitates advancement of knowledge through thoughtful reasoning by encouraging students to seek answers to the questions around us and the questions themselves. This balance allows students an opportunity to openly discuss different topics in musical performance in a positive environment, developing their own ideas and collaborating with their peers in performance. My teaching is dynamic and versatile to serve each individual student’s needs. I found that throughout my own development and observing private students and colleagues the importance of creating a unique and creative approach to learning helps better engage and motivate students to further develop their musical passions and improve their overall musicianship.

TESTIMONIALS
❮ ❯
My 10 year old is enjoying the class and learning a lot and has already made good progress in just a few lessons with Kristine. She is a very thorough teacher, very observant and gives detailed instructions on how my son can improve in specific aspects.
-Sherifa M.
Kristine is a wonderful teacher who is patient and enthusiastic. My daughter has been doing private clarinet lessons with her for 2 months and has substantially improved in tone, depth and ability. She loves class and looks forward to it every week.
-Caroline G.
Kristine is a very enthusiastic teacher who is passionate about music. My 12 year old daughter has taken four sessions with her and has definitely been challenged.
-Amber S.
Kristine did a great job working with my 9-year-old son on clarinet fundamentals, which my beginner clarinet player very much needed. She is open and approachable and engaging, while at the same time paving a path for students to grow and mature in their technique and musical expression. I also appreciate that she gives students the opportunity to proceed at the pace of their choice: they can submit practice videos during the week to get feedback and additional assignments before the next lesson, or they can keep the pace more deliberate if they need to focus on mastering something. She also shared theory and sheet music exercises online with us and gave us helpful advice on purchasing an appropriate reed. Thank you!
-An Outschool Parent
Kristine is an excellent teacher! She offers strong support to students while also putting high expectations. She tailors the class according to the student's needs and I appreciate that she always kept me updated. I can tell that she loves teaching music and she is really good at that. My son has been enjoying the class and improved a lot. Thank you so much, Kristine, and we look forward to continuing the clarinet classes with you!
-Jing F.
Great lessons. Daughter loved working with the teacher and improved exponentially over the summer in precision, tempo, and tone. Teacher offered good constructive feedback and took time to deconstruct measures where my daughter struggled. Provided warm ups/exercises to help improve consistency, flexibility, and sound quality. We recommend for anyone wanting to learn/improve playing the clarinet to be the best they can be.
